It is said that Bholenath resides either high above the ground i.e. in the mountains or deep under the ground. There are many such temples of Bholenath in Rajasthan.

Today we are going to take you on a trip to a temple of Mahadev in which Shiva Shambhu sits inside a cave in the underworld. Because of its location below the ground, it is known as Pataleshwar Mahadev.

The Shivalinga of this temple is Swayambhu, that is, Bhole Shankar himself has appeared here. It is noteworthy that Swayambhu Shivling is that Shivling which is formed naturally on its own.

Tour and specialty of Pataleshwar Mahadev Temple Udaipur

When seen from outside, the temple of Pataleshwar Mahadev looks very ordinary. There is a canal flowing adjacent to the temple.

This canal connects Madar Lake to Fatehsagar Lake. Through this canal the water of Madar Lake is released into Fatehsagar Lake.

As soon as you cross the canal and enter the temple complex, you see stairs leading to the temple of Pataleshwar Mahadev.

Behind these stairs, the idol of Lord Ganesha and a Dhuni is seen in front of it. There is a huge banyan tree on the left side.

The temple of Pataleshwar Mahadev is built inside a cave about 15-20 feet below the ground. There are concrete stairs to go down into the cave.

Local people say that these stairs did not exist about 15 years ago. Here, an iron chain used to hang in its place. At that time people used to descend down by placing their feet on the rock with the help of iron chain.

There is a little open space below when you go inside the temple. Hanging rocks are visible all around. Bholenath is seated in front. There is a naturally formed cow face in front of Bholenath.

It is said that earlier this Shivalinga was a part of the rock here and its color was the same as the rock. Later, due to slight changes in Shivalinga with time, Ashtadhatu Shivalinga was established here.

There is a small tunnel at the back side next to the Shivalinga. Some people say that after going a little further in this tunnel, there is an open space like the temple of Mahadev.

It is also said that this tunnel goes from here to the temple of Ubeshwar Mahadev. Another tunnel like this one is also visible at the bottom of the stairs.

Being adjacent to a canal, this temple of Pataleshwar Mahadev often gets filled with water during the rainy season, but with time that water also goes away.

It seems that water comes into the tunnel from one side and then leaves from the other side over time.

There is a very peaceful atmosphere in the temple. You must sit here for some time and remember Bholenath. Doing this brings a strange peace to the mind.
