The construction of this beautiful Palace was started in 1743 and it was completed in the year 1746. It was constructed as a summer palace under the direction of Maharana Jagat Singh II of Udaipur, Rajasthan.

Initially, the Lake Palace was called Jagniwas or Jag Niwas and this name was kept after Maharana Jagat Singh, who was the founder of it. But later on, it was renowned by the name “Lake Palace”.

The successive rulers of Udaipur used this as a Summer Palace for them. It also has an interesting story of 1857 Indian Sepoy Mutiny.

During the rebellion, a lot of European families ran away from Nimach and used the Island as a shelter, which is offered by Maharana Swaroop Singh to them.

Maharana destroyed all the town’s boat so that no rebel could reach the island and his guests remain protected. Later on, Bhagwat Singh changed the Jagat Niwas Palace into the first luxury hotel of Udaipur.

An American artist named Didi Contractor became the design consultant to this hotel project and she worked from 1961 to 1969 on this. In the year 1971, the management of Lake Palace came under Taj Hotels Resort & Palaces.

As we have read already it was built between 1743 to 1746. The architecture of this magnificent building is so attractive that it will certainly please you.

It is made of white and black marbles, and it has an arrangement of courtyard that are lined up with various terraces, columns, well-structured gardens and charming fountains.
Floor of the Lake Palace is embedded with black and white marbles and the walls of the Palace is ornamented by using coloured stones having arabesques form of artistic decoration on them and what to say for the dome, it is perfectly attractive as the way it is.

The room which is present on the upper portion of the palace is a perfect circle, having a diameter of around 21 feet (6.4 m).

There are several rooms in the Lake Palace and all of them are known by different names like, Dhola Mahal, Khush Mahal, Bada Mahal, Phool Mahal and Ajjan Niwas, and they enhance the beauty of this elegant place.
