Mewar is known all over the world for its pride, fame and glory. The Maharanas here got many public utility works done which are proving their importance even today.

One of these works is the construction of Rajsamand Lake. Earlier this lake was known as Rajsamudra. It was constructed by Maharana Raj Singh in 1662 AD. A dam was built on the Gomti River near Kankroli in 1877.

This lake is man-made and is the second largest freshwater lake in Rajasthan after Jaisamand Lake. The length of this lake is 6.64 kilometers, width is 2.9 kilometers and depth is 16.5 meters.

Apart from being a major source of water in this region, this lake is also a major tourist destination. The major tourist places here are Nau Chowki or Nav Chowki, Raj Prashasti Inscription, Amba Mata and Gewar Mata Temple, Raj Singh Bagh, Raj Singh Panorama etc.

As soon as you enter the main gate, Raj Singh's panorama is situated on the left side, in which the life of Maharana Raj Singh as well as Mewar of that time is told.

Pal is the main part of this lake which is known as Nau Chowki or Nav Chowki. To reach the water level in the lake, there are nine steps of stairs, the special thing of which is that there is a post after every nine stairs.

In this manner, a total of nine checkpoints reach the water level of this lake. Also, when the stairs are seen from all sides, their total number comes to nine only.

On this nau chowki pal, there are three cenotaph-like galleries made of marble. These galleries are an excellent example of architecture.

There are magnificent sculptures and carvings on their roofs and pillars, which remind one of the Jain temples of Dilwara located in Mount Abu.

In these galleries, very delicate carvings of figures of animals, birds and geometric decorative motifs have been done along with Gods and Goddesses. Seeing all this the mind is filled with wonder.

There is also a pond in the third baradari which is filled with water. It might have been used for religious functions or for bathing of special persons.

Three ornate archways made of marble are located here. Earlier their number was five but after getting destroyed with time, now only three are left.

Various decorative motifs have also been engraved on these arches. It is believed that this arch is also made of nine stones.

The world-famous Raj Prashasti epic is engraved in the form of an inscription on this very sail of Nau chowki. This inscription is the largest and longest inscription in the world.

During the reign of Maharana Raj Singh, in 1661 AD, Pandit Ranchod Bhatt Tailang had written a book named Raj Prashasti. He stayed in Rajsamand for 9 months and got it engraved on stone tablets.

This inscription is engraved on 25 large stones in the niche near the stairs. Ornate sculptures are carved all around these large platforms with niches.

Each stone block of the inscription is made of black stone. The size of the boulder is three feet long and two and a half feet wide.

These inscriptions belong to the dynasty of Mewar. According to them, Mewar dynasty started from Lord Shri Ram. In these, the history of a total of 76 generations is described from Shri Ram to the then Maharana Amar Singh II of Mewar.

There are a total of 1106 verses on these inscriptions written in Sanskrit language. In this, along with the history of Mewar, the social, economic, religious and political situation of that time is also described.

At the end of Nau Chowki, there is a temple built at the same time in which Amba Mata and Gevar Mata are worshipped. It is said that the construction of this dam was completed only due to the sacrifice and blessings of Gevar Mata.

When the water level of the dam increases and reaches the feet of Amba Mata and Gevar Mata, then a sheet is started on the dam.

There used to be a garden next to Pal with various trees and plants during the time of Rana Raj Singh, but now due to lack of maintenance it is no longer present in its old form.

This lake is a living example of human intelligence and skill, seeing which your mind will be filled with reverence for your ancestors.

If you want to enjoy religious, historical and tourism at one place, then you must visit Nau Chowki once and see Rajsamand Lake.
